Oxfordshire Gundog Trainer: Emily Wickham

About Emily and her dogs

My first gundog was Louie, a red working cocker spaniel, he taught me so much about the breed and fed my passion to focus on gundog training. Louie taught me the importance of building the foundations for a happy and content working gundog living in a pet home. We have achieved Distinction in our Grade 1, 2, 3 & 4 Gundog Club assessments and we also work beating and picking up during the season.

Since Louie,  Evie the Springer Spaniel has joined the team, a truly all round versatile pet gundog, she is my demo dog at classes, we have achieved distinction in our Grade 4 Gundog Club assessment and attended working tests during the Summer. During the season Evie is a hard working beating, picking up and peg dog.

I also have two young dogs Sage the Labrador and Olive the Sprocker. Sage is being trained as a dogging in and picking up dog and Olive will join me on the beating line and dabble in some picking up.

I also have two rehomed Spaniels. Ted the cocker who is my most trusty beating dog and Rocket, the Springer Spaniel who is currently training to help me demo alongside Evie.

Training approach

My training approach is educational, my mission is to help you understand your dog and work towards a partnership built to last forever. I am a reward-based trainer, meaning that all training is conducted using a reward-based approach appropriate to the dog being trained using food, toys, play and environmental rewards.

My mission is to help people understand the force-free training ethos and help pet gundog owners lead a fulfilling life with their dogs. In particular, am passionate about helping new puppy owners to give their dogs the best start through building strong relationships with positive training and games.

Gundog experience

My partner is a gamekeeper, so I am involved in many aspects of the shoot from helping dogging in during the Summer to beating and picking up during the season on both commercial and smaller syndicate shoots. I have recently obtained my shotgun licence and like to attend clay, sim and game days as much as I can.

Particular breed knowledge

I specialise in training Spaniels and helping owners understand how to work with their Spaniels hunting instincts rather than trying to supress or ignore them. I can help teach your spaniel to learn how to go for a pet dog walk and be able to work during the season, as I have achieved this with my own dogs.

I also train several Labrador Retrievers and act as an instructor for the retriever training at Cherwell Gundog Club.

Services offered

I am instructor for the foundation grades, specialising in helping those with pet gundogs who want to learn how to harness their natural abilities and those who wish to take their dogs out working in the shooting field during the season.

I offer both classes and 121s for owners with gundog breeds or crosses of gundog breeds from Puppy classes to working in the shooting field.

Qualifications and other accreditations

In 2011 I began my dog training journey attending courses, seminars, conferences and assisting with pet dog training classes. Prior to training full time, I ran HoundsLand Doggy Day Care, where we looked after a multitude of different dog breeds giving me invaluable practical experience of dealing with dogs of all breeds and personalities.

In 2017 I qualified as a pet dog trainer, gaining full membership to the Professional Association of Canine Trainers and in 2020 I qualified with the Gundog Training Academy. I am also a qualified bronze level instructor with UK Sniffer Dogs.
