Karl Cheatham is our Gundog Club Instructor in Loughborough, Leicestershire, and trains people and their dogs for the Gundog Club foundation grades (grades 1 – 3). Karl is an approved Gundog Club force free trainer.
Karl and his dogs
Karl has owned gundogs for more than 16 years and currently has 2 labradors, Wren and Finch, and a Whippet called Owl. He works his labradors as part of picking up teams on shoots in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
Training approach
Karl is a force free trainer and uses only evidence based training methods based on learning theory. He trains with a structured but relaxed approach, keeping everything fun. He believes this builds confidence in both the handler and dog and improves the bond between them.
Gundog experience
Karl has has been involved in the Gundog world since 2013 when he started training a new Labrador puppy, Wren, with the Gundog Club. He then went on to work with an accredited instructor with Gundog Club for 6 years at the same time as working towards qualifying as a dog trainer. He has picked up on several shoots over the years, mostly on syndicate driven shoots with bags ranging from 50 to 250 birds.
He specialises in retriever training but has also successfully trained with Hunter Retrievers and HPRs.
Services offered
Karl offers group puppy, adolescent, and gundog courses on approximately 7 acres of mixed woodland and pastureland in the heart of the beautiful Charnwood Forest near Loughborough, North Leicestershire. He also offer 1:1 training and home visits around the Leicestershire area.
Karl helps clients from pet owners wanting to gain foundation skills and more connection with their dogs through to those wanting to take their dogs out on a shoot.
Qualifications and other accreditations
In addition to his Gundog Club accreditation, Karl is a qualified dog trainer with the IMDT and ADTB. He is also a qualified City & Guilds scentwork Instructor. He works hard maintaining his CPD and invests in keeping his knowledge and skills up to date.
