Who is the scheme for?
The scheme is for anyone
who would like to train their gundog in a way
that best uses his natural instincts. All you
need to make a start is a healthy gundog, ten to
fifteen minutes of spare time, five or six days each
week, and a few simple training aids (click
here).
Is this scheme an
alternative to Field Trials and Working Tests?
The
Gundog Club Graded Training Scheme complements the
existing system of tests and trials. It will
help you prepare for them if you wish to compete.
It will also prepare your dog for life as a working
gundog. If however, you simply
want to enjoy a fun outdoor activity with your
dog the training scheme will give you a sense of
pride as you and your dog learn to work together as
a team. Most importantly it will give
you a happy, healthy and obedient pet.
When can I start?
Dogs must be over six
months old to enter the tests. There is much
you can do before that time. Long stays
and rigorous heelwork are not appropriate for young
puppies, but establishing a good recall, a
hunger for retrieving, and some simple skills
such as sit, can be started much earlier. Take a
look at the
Key Skills
section, and the
puppy training manual,
for some ideas on getting started with a pup under
six months old. |
