The docking of dogs'
tails is now banned in England. However, there are exemptions
from the ban for working dogs with certain conditions. This is
a brief summary of the information you may need. More information
is available on the DEFRA website
q
The dog
being docked will have to be less than 5 days old
q
The
veterinary surgeon will have to certify that he or she has seen
evidence that the dog is likely to work in specified areas. (See
below)
q
The dog
will also need to be micro-chipped to identify it.
q
The type
of dogs which may be docked include spaniels, terriers and HPR
breeds.
q
The vet
carrying out the docking and micro-chipping must issue a
certificate. You can find the certificate here

q
Dogs which
are docked after the 6th April may not be shown in
England.
Please
note that no vet will be obliged to dock your puppies, even if you
fulfil all the criteria required. It is entirely at the vet’s
discretion whether or not to do so. |
