Lottie is ten weeks old today.  She had her second vaccination two days ago and we are looking forward to taking her out in public without carrying her as she already weighs 17lbs.

In preparation for this,  I am accustoming Lottie to walking attached to a lead.  She is not at all panicky about this,  but is very determined to chew the lead as she walks along.

The pup had  had her first vaccination before we collected her at just seven and a half weeks old.  The vet who carried this out recommended the final vaccination take place two weeks later on 29th June.

It was interesting to discover that our own vet still felt vaccinations should take place at 8 and 12 weeks of age,  and had reservations about the effectiveness of a final vaccination at this stage.  She felt that the presence of maternal antibodies were still a factor.

Lottie is placed on the examination table.

For the last few days I have been putting Lottie into an outside kennel with my two cockers each morning and each afternoon.  She is now nearly as big as they are.

To begin with she spent just a couple of minutes in the kennel and provided that she was silent,  was let out again.  Each day I have extended the time she remains there.  This morning Lottie was in the kennel for a full hour, and this afternoon for an hour and a half.   She spends most of this time asleep in the sun and we have only had one occasion when she has protested.

Once we have this routine settled,  I will begin establishing a short training session morning and afternoon after she has spent some time in the kennel.  Hopefully Lottie will be nice and fresh and pleased to see me!

In the waiting room

vets do not all agree on vaccination schedules..

She did however agree to vaccinate Lottie again for me so that I could get her out and about,  and I agreed to return at 12 weeks for another booster.

Our vet had never seen a Chesapeake Bay Retriever before.   Lottie is the first in our practice,  and is generating a lot of interest wherever we take her.

I am continuing to call Lottie's name many times each day.  Sometimes she gets a little food treat when she comes, and at other times she does not.
